When asking for something, ask yourself "what for?"

It's very seldom that I post about things I've learned at church esp during homilies but this I just wanted to reflect on...

The priest said and I'm just paraphrasing...
When praying for something have you thought... "What for?"... It's like thinking what the Lord may have been thinking before granting your wish/prayer... Maybe instead of just merely asking for a lot of things from Him, also reflect on the purpose of things... When He grants this... When you get well and then what?... So like when you ask "not to fail in the exam"... What for?... Quite simple yet difficult to answer esp me when I was going through my usual "list of prayers" because I can't come up with reasons aside from superficial and selfish ones...

Made me reflect really...

The priest ended his homily by saying (paraphrasing again)... Perhaps next time whenever we pray not just to know our life's purpose but to know what God's purpose for our life is...
